Just a small post to publicly acknowledge the successful appointment of my friend Katherine Side to MUN’s Women’s Studies Department Chair position. I am so proud of her, and am so sad for MSVU. My students often tell me there’s no longer any need for Women’s Studies on our campus, and yet, just this summer, Hants County offered a summer camp for girls that included going to a spa and getting manicures. When a local girl child wanted to attend the boy’s camp because it included hiking and fishing, she was told that she could not join the fun. She could join the other girls. Obviously, we still need Women’s Studies programs.
MSVU has lost one of the the western world’s most preminent Women’s Studies scholars. Our loss is MUN’s gain.
